Next Steps – Beyond Years 11 and 13

Post-16 education and the paths that can be followed

There are a number of routes that Year 11 can follow at the end of the year including:

  • Post-16 education in a college or school-based Sixth Form

  • An apprenticeship

If a student wants to apply for Sixth Form study then the system we use is MyChoice16 Information on using this system can be found below as can the Sixth Form open evening dates for the local area.

To access the My Choice16 website please go to: https://www.mychoice16.co.uk/

How to make an application

Information on apprenticeships can be found in a number of places:

www.apprenticeships.org.uk – The main National Apprenticeship website where students can register and apply for apprenticeship vacancies in their chosen occupation

https://www.getingofar.gov.uk - A more accessible government-run website

Post 18 education and the paths that can be followed

As with Year 11 there are a number of routes that Year 13 can follow at the end of the year including:

  • University

  • An apprenticeship

  • Full-time employment

For those going to university, applications are done through UCAS and we would advise students to visit prospective universities before applying:

www.ucas.com – Universities and Colleges Admissions Service giving information for those who would like to go to university, covering everything you need to know including how and when to apply

University is not for everyone so there are a number of information sources available to help a student decide on a path:

www.apprenticeships.org.uk – The main National Apprenticeship website where students can register and apply for apprenticeship vacancies in their chosen occupation

https://www.getingofar.gov.uk - A more accessible government-run website

www.notgoingtouni.co.uk – Information for those who would prefer an apprenticeship, distance learning or employment with training, rather than university when they leave college

Other useful Links

https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk – Main website for the National Careers Service, where there are links to job profiles, CV writing and other careers information

www.careersbox.co.uk – Contains a range of films documenting different careers, employment and training paths
